Sports Counseling

Athletes at all levels focus the majority of their training on their bodies. At times, they have trouble participating to their ability level even when they are physically in top shape. This can be attributed to emotional difficulties such as anxiety resulting from performance evaluation, lack of self-confidence and/or having unreasonable expectations from coaches, fans, friends or family. Training the mind can be just as important as physical training.

As a Sports Counselor I combine the three aspects of my training to better help and prepare athletes; psychotherapy, clinical hypnosis, professional coaching. Improving athletic performance by enhancing such skills as focused attention, pre-game rituals, developing positive mental images, learning effective self-talk and time and stress management is the first step in reaching the goals you set out for yourself. What can be more important, especially when you are in a mental down and out, is focusing on your development as an individual. As stated earlier, your performance, or lack of, may be a result of personal and clinical issues associated with sports performance. For example, high levels of stress and anxiety, fears of failure and/or success, and burn-out. Interpersonal issues such as school, family or marital difficulty also play a role in your performance levels. Addressing such issues and learning coping skills, relaxation training, how to make better decisions, and life management skills can bring you back to your full potential as an athlete. More importantly, you can learn valuable skills to take with you for the rest of your life.
